School Counseling Connection: October 2026 - Friendship Skills
October counseling focus on friendship skills and social conflict resolution. Tips for parents: when your child shares a tricky friend moment, ask follow-ups like 'what do you wish you had said?' or 'what would you do differently next time?' Model boundary-setting by saying 'It's okay to ask for space' or 'You can say no kindly.' When reading or watching stories involving friendship, pause to discuss fairness, kindness, or hurt feelings. For handling social conflict: pause and cool down by taking a deep breath, use 'I' statements to share feelings instead of blaming, listen carefully without interrupting, brainstorm fair solutions together, ask a trusted teacher or adult for help if stuck or feeling unsafe. Recommended books: Be a Friend by Salina Yoon, Better Together by Chloe Douglass, My Best Friend, Sometimes by Naomi Danis, One by Kathryn Otoshi, Better Than You by Trudy Ludwig.

Nurse's Nook: Too Sick for School Guidelines
Guidelines for determining when a child is too sick for school and when they can return. Stay home with: feeling too sick for regular activities, temperature of 100° or greater orally, suspicion of flu or other contagious virus, migraine/throbbing/fatigue/light sensitivity, redness/swollen glands/lesions in mouth, vomiting or diarrhea more than once in past 24 hrs, red/glassy/crusty eyes or yellow/green pus, rash/itching/drainage from skin lesions or sores. Return to school after: no fever for 24 hrs without meds and feeling better, normal temperature without medication for 24 hrs, no vomit or diarrhea without meds for 24 hrs and tolerating regular diet, or with doctor's note as appropriate. Prevention: wash hands, avoid close contact with sick people, see doctor if symptoms don't resolve. Treatment: stay home, get rest and fluids, follow doctor's recommendations.

Planned Absences and Early Departures
Planned absences for family vacations or extended school vacations are strongly discouraged. Parents must write a note or email to the classroom teacher, school secretary, and nurse in advance of the planned absence. The teacher is not required to provide student work prior to the planned absence, however, the student is responsible for completing all missed assignments upon return to school. A note or email to the classroom teacher, school secretary, and nurse is also required for planned early departures. Parents must meet their child in the school office and sign their student out. For safety reasons, no student will be permitted to wait outside.
