10 Facts About School Attendance
Key facts about chronic absenteeism: (1) In NJ, chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year. (2) Nationally, chronic absence has doubled by end of 2021-22 school year, affecting nearly one out of three students. (3) Effects of absenteeism can be felt early in a student's academic career. (4) Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by end of third grade. (5) By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator of whether a student will drop out of high school. (6) Missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days, can negatively affect academic performance. (7) Students in communities with high poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent. (8) When students improve attendance rates, they improve academic prospects and chances for graduating. (9) Attendance improves when schools engage students and parents positively and provide mentors for chronically absent students. (10) Being absent just two times per month can lead to a student being considered chronically absent.

School Attendance Importance
Good attendance is essential to student achievement and graduation. Research shows chronic absenteeism marks the point where students start to fall behind academically. The district has specific policy, regulations and procedures in place to record, monitor and track absences over time. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly with school staff and work together to support students in attending school on time every day, whenever possible.
