Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the theme 'Todos Somos, Somos Uno; We Are All, We Are One.' The observation honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a 30-day period in 1988. September 15 is significant as the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, while Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18 respectively.

October is celebrated as Polish-American Heritage Month, an annual event first celebrated in 1981 after organization by Michael Blichasz, President of the Polish American Cultural Center in Philadelphia. The month was changed to October in 1986 to aid participating schools in organization during the school year. October holds significance as the month when the first Polish settlers came to Jamestown, Virginia. Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush made proclamations, and subsequent U.S. Presidents have made official messages noting Polish American Heritage Month and General Pulaski Memorial Day.

October is celebrated as Italian-American Heritage Month, designated by President George Bush's Proclamation 6045 on October 12, 1989. The month honors the rich ethnic heritage of Italian-Americans and their many contributions to American culture in business, arts, education, government, athletics, and military service. Notable Italian-Americans highlighted include Christopher Columbus, Fiorello La Guardia, Enrico Fermi, Paolo Soleri, and Joe DiMaggio.

A. Russell Knight Elementary School held a Glow Dance on October 1st for students and families to gather, have fun, and strengthen connections. The event featured a mobile sensory room (funded by a $2,500 grant from an outside organization) to ensure all students could participate and feel included.

High School West is performing the family-friendly comedy "Hotel Frankenstein." When Dr. Frankenstein turns his castle into a hotel, he hopes to find a new brain for his monster, but gets more than he bargained for when Dracula, the Wolfman, and a wise-cracking comedian and his family show up. A great way to kick off the Halloween season!
